sitting in meditation simply says sitting quietly. in the tranquil spot, wear extensive clothes and sit cross-legged. make the body relax, hold the spine upright, make the lips slightly close and the tongue on the top of the mouth. both palms face up with one palm on the other palm meanwhile both thumbs face each other and are put in the the base of the thigh. regulate your breath to gentle and prolonged condition while make your mindfulness of thought in the state of silence and peace. meditation can be seen as a static state of movement that can regulate the breath, make mind peaceful, relax joints and massage muscles. if the very state can be as deep as you go into, you will find your true self. if a person’s mind and morality are are noble and lofty at ordinary times, then he will enter into the supreme state of sitting in meditation; if a person is gravely sinful, certainly he will never reach the high state of chan over his whole life. referring to the realm of chan practice, we just think of what level or what day we shall obtain the realm, which is thought in a wrong way. the perfect realm is what we do good works or make merit at ordinary times. we always do good and make the requisites of enlightenment, not to pursue external reward, but to purify the will. many people take the purification of the will as sitting in meditation or chanting practice. i don’t think so. the purification of the will means the practice or cultivation of doing no evil and doing only good. many people, especially those have read records of lamp transmission, are full of various imaginations. even some of them with strange imaginations. people have various ultimate constituents and so have different methods of enlightenment as well. according to the records of lamp transmission, some people gain sudden enlightenment abruptly and their spiritual outlook changes at a stroke; however, there are also some people continually gain enlightenment little by little and even don’t know they themselves have got it finally. the enlightenment matter can’t be gained directly, needing an opportunity and stable, profound consumption in daily life. it would be unimaginable for enlightenment if there were not solid and deep practice experiences. hear or mind and eyes can’t revolve around the enlightenment or that may cause mental disorder. the reason is he couldn’t ensure daily practice experiences at root. what does confession mean? it means getting rid of wrong doings and turning over a new leaf. chance is not its own dharma gate of buddhism, as both christianity and islam also pay important attention to confession. confession in buddhism is different from other religions: whom do other religions such as islam and christianity confession to? they confession to god or hierarch to forgive them. if god forgive you, your sins will be removed. confession in buddhism mainly face to the public and yourself. though people sometimes make chance in front of buddha but mainly self-condemnation. when crossing over sentient beings, we monks can not just use a dharma-gate, speaking that i only cudgeled others and teach people to chant amitabha, which is far from adequate. we cross over people, should forwardly go to people and meet who is who. we should adept at making flexible use of dharma-gate, make dharma-gate cater to sentient beings and can not make sentient beings cater to dharma-gate. so we cannot subscribe to which buddhist school. for example, i’m from chan sect but i can’t persuade people to chant sutra. if i persuaded people to chant sutra, that seemed to betray ancestors, which is not so good. this violates principles of buddhism. i’m a monk from shaolin temple. shaolin temple is the ancestral monastery of chan sect, which is a historical result, not sealed by any one. so i’m pretty open-minded and don’t get caught in one’s trap as so called an heir. this is my basic standpoint of chan sect.
