buddhist doctrines exist first in the religious practices of buddhist votaries, therefore its essence is embodied in the practical wisdom and spiritual discipline, which is the so-called “cultivating wit”.
due to its uniqueness based on practice, buddhism’s established theories are reliable and provable with the common characteristics as time goes on, which can be realized through unremitting efforts and spiritual discipline, as a result, man can get enlightened in remarkable endurance and persistence regardless of the constraints of space and time, and that is workable in both india and china from the ancient times until today.
dozens of ethnic cultures have been deeply influenced by buddhism with its extensive and profound ideas and dharma knowledge, whereas the nature of buddhism still remains in wisdom enhancement and spiritual exercise. and so as the buddha once warned us to put our limited life into the buddhist practices.
the intrinsic quality of buddhism is not to develop a belief, but to purify the human mind as well as their lives, and only by this way man can dissolve their selves and take the road of attaining enlightenment, so that the precious traits of compassion, generosity and willingness to give are developed in the course, and the fundamental spirit of benefiting oneself as well as others advocated by the buddha shall eventually be attained.
moreover, the buddha briefly summarized his teachings in one sentence: “to steer clear of all the possibilities which are to lure him into an evil practice and to strive to do anything that is beneficial to others so that he can purge his psyche of all the spiritual impurities”. and the sentence shows the significance of purification in people’s min d and their lives. based on the above, the buddha further pointed out that buddhist precepts are to practice morals, moreover, the sentence says a practitioner needs to “steer clear of all the possibilities which are to lure him into an evil practice and to strive to do anything that is beneficial to others”, that stands for the moral norms we need to observe on a physical level. meanwhile, taking control of heart can be achieved through practicing dhyana meditation; while purifying one’s mind is the wisdom what the practitioner acquired in zen meditation, that is “purging one’s psyche of all spiritual impurities” in buddhism, and that stands for the self-purification on a spiritual level.
from what i have mentioned above, in terms of mind purification, the universal values of buddhism and its significance exceed the limits of religion, race and regional culture. that is the great contribution made by the buddha to human civilization as well as the core of the buddha’s inculcation.
